The Peninsula Dental School is a new build, 41 chair dental teaching facility that provides shared space for medical school students. The building houses teaching spaces, seminar rooms, a student common room and changing facilities.
The school was procured by the University of Plymouth, with Primary Care Services being delivered by the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.
This BREEAM Excellent scheme was completed in spring of 2011. The build was on programme and on budget in preparation for the client fit out and programmed training period over the summer of 2011 and public treatments began in September 2011.
The key features of the design include intra oral/OPG x-ray facilities, a new shape cluster layout with high levels of natural light and views out from clinical spaces, high spec office areas and shared seminar rooms with whiteboards for medical school and dental school students.
ADG were the lead consultants and architects from inception to Stage 4 and we were novated over to the Design and Build contractor. Good client and end user working relationships were established and maintained throughout and this made the whole process both efficient and enjoyable.
It was essential that the project was HTM/HBN Compliant, BREEAM Excellent and had 15% onsite renewable energy generation. It was also essential that the building had a fully HTM compliant air-handling system. Full coordination of the dental chairs with the necessary M&E servicing and cabinetry layouts was a critical requirement that would ensure the teaching space worked as planned.
