Godolphin Arms & Mount Haven Hotel
The Godolphin Arms is prominently located within the historic village of Marazion, with a spectacular seafront location overlooking St Michael’s Mount.
ADG was appointed to provide architectural design services in the development of the project and completion of the detailed design and construction stages. An extensive consultation with Cornwall Council planning and conservation officers, relating in particular to the sensitive location and Grade II listed building status of the existing building was required. A comprehensive historic building report was produced supporting a detailed planning and listed building consent application, with full planning consent being granted in February 2013.

The scheme included the addition of two extensions, a dramatic two storey infill to the rear elevation, accommodating additional dining space and a new stair enclosure to the front elevation, connecting a new reception space to upper floor bedrooms.
The two storey rear extension has been developed as a contemporary design forming a centrepiece to the new works, being highly visible from the beach, Causeway and St Michael’s Mount. The design incorporates sympathetic contemporary materials such as coloured zinc cladding, suited to the exposed coastal location.
The opportunity was also taken to review the servicing strategy to improve efficiencies where possible. Fittings and fixtures that improve water and energy efficiency, from a local supply chain, was specified where possible.

The Mount Haven Hotel, also in Marazion, was acquired by St Aubyn Estates in the autumn of 2016. Following the successful remodeling of the Godolphin Arms, we were appointed initially to consider building regulations compliance and upgrade options for this existing hotel.
Following this work a significant refurbishment and renovation project was undertaken and successfully completed within six months. The hotel has been transformed into the ‘haven’, providing 19 bedrooms, treatment rooms, a restaurant and a contemporary terrace bar enjoying unobstructed sea views.
The works included the removal of existing single storey extensions, relocating, enlarging and reconfiguring the kitchen facilities and the renewal and upgrade of mechanical and electrical services. The extensive gardens and landscaping were replanted and a new courtyard garden was created, providing private external space for ground floor rooms. The project required a hands-on approach and close collaboration throughout the design and construction process.
“It has been a great pleasure to work with ADG Architecture Design Graphics, they’re such a talented and dedicated team. I feel that this development has enhanced the architectural merit of The Godolphin Arms, with stylish contemporary flourishes.”
