Yelverton, Dartmoor
We were presented with an existing tired and unloved 1950’s house. Our clients wanted to extend this to create a modern family dwelling with light, bright, open plan interiors that would flow out into the large south-facing garden.
We began by conducting a series of sketch design options in order to fully explore the brief and all the available solutions. These were presented in sketch form and following detailed discussions with the clients, we settled on a solution that made most efficient use of the available budget, while elegantly meeting the briefing requirements.
We proposed a scheme that involved the complete strip out and internal remodeling of the dwelling, together with the addition of two extensions.
The building was completely re-designed ‘as a whole’, so that the extensions now seamlessly blend into the property. We worked closely with Dartmoor National Park Authority to achieve planning consent for the works in this sensitive area. We found that by respecting this unique location, while also taking design ideas from the original property, we were able to deliver the client’s brief and obtain the consent from the Planning Authority.
We were then commissioned to prepare the construction drawings, achieve Building Control approval and tender the project to local contractors. New bi-folding doors create a real wow factor in the main living space and link the new kitchen, dining and lounge areas with the garden beyond. A new Oak staircase rises to first floor where the reconfigured an extended layout includes 4 bedrooms (2 ensuite) and a family bathroom. We retained involvement during the construction phase and worked with the client and builder to achieve a successfully completed project.
