In response to changes in legislation, Nuffield Hospitals invited us to join a Steering Group to act as lead consultants and designers, for a major business transformation project involving the relocation of sterilisation and decontamination services out of 39 hospitals and into 6 regional hubs.
The process began with ADG assisting a logistic specialist in identifying and securing existing industrial buildings that would be suitable for conversion.
Our work then required us to provide layout options within these shells that would satisfy the complex process routes whilst meeting specific space standards and supporting efficient working practices. Critically for these facilities, the process identifies both clean and dirty areas and routes that must be kept separate at all times. The process route is hence the main design driver.
he majority of the design consideration and work undertaken was within the interiors of these buildings, with mechanical and electrical installations occupying a large proportion of both the detailed design and project budgets. Designs for these centres were fully compliant with HBN13, the team taking full responsibility for selection, delivery and installation of the specialist equipment such as autoclaves, washers and trollies. The completed projects are extremely discrete, with most people passing by with no idea about what goes on behind the closed doors. These projects do not fall into the category of ‘architecture’ in the traditional sense, however the rigour involved in their design and commission has been none the less demanding and rewarding for the team involved
