Boringdon Hotel, Plymouth
Gaia Spa, Boringdon Hotel, Plymouth
This project has involved the design and creation of approximately 1500sqm of high quality spa and gym facilities for a newly revitalised 4 star hotel, on the outskirts of Plymouth. The original Grade 1 listed Tudor Hall at Boringdon dates back to the 16th Century and was once a Tudor ‘C’ shaped house. The planning application has encompassed both the buildings and their historical settings within mature grounds. The completed project has provided enhancements to the immediate surroundings and setting as well as to the facilities themselves.
The project has required ongoing consultation with Plymouth City Council and English Heritage in order to arrive at a sympathetic, yet contemporary building suitable for purpose and flexible in nature. From inception and pre-application enquiry, through to the submission of the final application documents this has been achieved through continuous communication and consultation by way of drawings, diagrams and 3D modelling.
The evolved design, spread over 3 storeys and largely set into the landscape, makes efficient use of the developable site and steeply sloping topography, whilst being sympathetic in mass and height to the existing buildings. The accommodation includes 12 treatment rooms, a gym pool complex, relaxation areas and cafeteria.
Whilst being inherently energy intensive, the spa uses heat recovery technology to reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Water extraction via a borehole has also been introduced. The layout of the building has been driven by the various occupant access requirements and the need to provide a variety of spaces from public to private. The project also involved the landscaping of the grounds and the provision of improved car parking, based upon designs developed by local firm Rathbone Partnership. The completed project has become a great success and ranks as one of the top spa destinations in the south west.
