Darren Hawkes Landscapes, Fowey, Cornwall
Darren Hawkes is an Award-Winning garden and landscape designer, undertaking projects across the South West, as well as accumulating numerous medals at the annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Darren approached ADG to create a new office and studio for his design practice, combined with a workshop and storage for sister landscaping / maintenance company Wheelbarrow, both of which were spread across Fowey at various locations. One of these sites, located on the Windmill Industrial Estate in Fowey, provided the perfect location and site area to create a new multi-purpose building.
Working closely with Darren to understand his brief and requirements, and impact the constraints of the site, including overlooking of adjacent properties, and a sewer running through the site, we prepared a concept design and subsequent planning application. Close attention to the anticipated construction budget was critical from project inception, as was the attention to detail and combination of industrial and natural materials to create a striking design.
Utilising our 3D computer design software, we were able to explore the spaces in detail, and take the opportunity to capture Southerly views towards Fowey Hall and the coast beyond. Accommodation includes a workshop with secure storage, vehicular parking, staff shower, design studio with roof terrace, as well as three additional offices for third-party rental and possible future expansion.
In addition to our Clients brief for functional and uplifting workspaces, they wanted to ensure the building would be warm, and would have low running costs. Our detailed design incorporated high levels of insulation, in excess of Building Regulations requirements, as well as an array of PV solar panels on the roof to provide electricity. This has resulted in a building that is both comfortable to work in, so much that our Client has described their building as ‘the perfect realisation of a brief’.
“Having worked with Dan Stewart of ADG on several projects previously, I was confident that we shared a similar appreciation of form and materials, so it was an obvious decision to appoint them to carry out the design of our new studio/office/workshop. They did a couple of outline sketches based on our initial discussions and I immediately went for the bolder building silhouette proposed. From there all the internal layouts were designed for function and only as the building came together did, I appreciate how well-proportioned things were. As well as having a lovely space to work in the height of windows, generous amount of light and material choices all outperform my initial expectations. ADG helped us through the building regulations and advised us towards a methodology for construction that was really helpful. I would recommend them without reservation.”
