Brixham Fire Station
Brixham fire station is located in the centre of Brixham town, along Bolton Street. It is positioned approximately half a mile form Brixham Harbour and approximately five miles south of nearby Paignton, and a further eight miles from Torquay.
Following a formal internal options appraisal which included consideration for major renovation and extension of the existing station, DSFRS established that proposals for a full demolition and replacement of the previous building within its existing site location on Bolton Street was the best viable option.
This replacement facility provided the opportunity to renew and upgrade the mechanical and electrical engineering services, and to ensure the fabric of the building is more energy efficient.
Internal floor plans were configured to modern needs, along with improved ICT infrastructure and new technologies to aid in reducing running costs in line with DSFRS Code for the Sustainable Design of Buildings and Engineering Systems, and were all addressed in the proposed design.
Proposals for the replacement building allowed upgrades to vehicular appliances and equipment used, which in turn increased its operational effectiveness. The building was designed to meet DSFRS’s Sustainable Design Code to reduce the running costs and carbon footprint of the fire and rescue station.
The design was led by sustainable low energy design principles. The building envelope has high thermal insulation values and the renewable energy building services include air source heat pumps and roof mounted solar panels.
