Specialist Housing

Lower Compton Plymouth

The building has been developed following a detailed briefing exercise with the client, end users and key stakeholders, which included several consultation events with the project team, local authority and local residents.

The building provides 11 residential rooms together with both resident and staff support spaces including offices and meeting rooms. The building is divided horizontally in terms of its use and this horizontal “split” is strongly reflected in the building massing and elevation design. The ground floor provides secure parking and reception facilities.

A contemporary design aesthetic with a limited number of materials, including stone for some of the plinth areas, through coloured white render, powder coated aluminium windows and contrasting coloured cladding panels as a feature material, has been developed for the scheme.

The primary communal residential spaces including, kitchen and dining spaces, lounge and children’s room are arranged around three sides of an external courtyard, which forms the “heart” of the scheme. The courtyard, located on the south side of the site, provides an enclosed secure open space that can be used for a variety of activities including children’s play area, external seating and dining and recreational activities.

The wide opening looking on to Lower Compton Road incorporates timber fins to provide an element of privacy whilst also permitting light in to the courtyard.

The upper floors contain bedroom accommodation and also include a small office and meeting room, all of which are easily accessed from the main lift and stair core and are separated from the communal spaces and activity below.
