Since 2008, ADG has been assisting Hertford Investors with the regeneration of a former naval site to the east of Plymouth, known as Mount Wise. The location offers stunning views over Royal William Yard and beyond to the sea and Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall. It contains a group of listed buildings, including the former Admiral’s House, a cricket pitch and an underground, nuclear proof bunker. We have been appointed to develop a master plan, design individual buildings and to regenerate the site’s archaeological features.
In view of its historic importance, the team has worked closely with both English Heritage and the Conservation Team at Plymouth City Council to arrive at the design approach. The plan sympathetically remodels the existing buildings and successfully integrates the new buildings into the historic setting. The final design combines 450 dwellings with a hotel, offices, a cafe and retail units.
House types have been developed in conjunction with a residential agent, with the scheme being delivered in five phases and three have been completed so far. The third is Leeward House, comprising 59 apartments in a six storey building which offers stunning views over the city to the east, the cricket pitch to the north and the sea to the south. The architecture adopts a randomised approach to the elevational aesthetic, accentuated by a mix of balcony styles. The building is served by centralised plant and contains a combination of one and two bedroomed apartments, with generous roof terraces for the penthouse units.
