A central element of City College’s long-term strategy has been to combine the Goschen facilities with the main King’s Road Campus, enabled by the new S.T.E.M. Centre. ADG were appointed to provide architectural design consultancy services in the development of this major education project. An earlier site appraisal was carried out to consider the constraints and opportunities, potential building orientation, massing and site access issues both to and from the area local to the proposed building.
ADG worked closely with the college to develop the brief and preliminary design strategy. It became clear during early discussions with key stakeholder groups that the design should be developed with a focus on flexibility. This was important in being able to move away from the more traditional and institutional characteristics once associated with the design of educational establishments. This resulted in a re-appraisal of the brief through intensive consultation between the Design Team and the City College Team, within limited time constraints.
The refurbishment of the existing Hall (including the current raised stage area and the existing College Estates Offices below) has created a new performing arts facility, all within the scope of the project.
Following on from the development of the initial brief, our Design Team continued working alongside college representatives to establish and develop the specific design and requirements of each room, or space within the building. Wherever possible, the building design was developed to ensure minimal enclosed circulation routes. This, combined with the visual linking of the first three floors via the new atrium, has helped to create an open, spacious and contemporary facility.
