Buckwell House

Plymouth

Following on from the successful completion of a student scheme for Brunswick Ltd in Lisson Grove, Plymouth, ADG were appointed as lead designers for a regeneration project. This involved the regeneration of a redundant three storey, former employment office in the heart of Plymouth City Centre into a student residential complex.

Working closely with Plymouth City Council Urban Designers, we developed a number of design solution options, with the final solution providing 67 ensuite bedrooms in clusters, each containing a shared kitchen and dining room. The building also provides space for the secure storage of 34 cycles. To achieve this level of development two further storeys were added to the existing building and a full change of use planning consent was negotiated with Plymouth City Council.

The increased height of the building was a contentious planning issue and the elevations had to be designed to create both a striking and economically viable landmark on this prominent corner location. In view of the planned occupation date, the complex framed nature of the existing building and the restrictive nature of this tight city centre site, an extensive analysis of the building fabric was required. This resulted in the adoption of a timber framed solution for the additional storeys.

The project was completed within the client’s programme to ensure full occupancy before the start of the new academic year.
