ADG Celebrates Major Renovation of Landmark Cornish Inn

A landmark Cornish inn overlooking St Michaels Mount has unveiled its radical redesign and contemporary new look just in time for Easter.

The Godolphin Arms, at Marazion, has undergone a stunning transformation project managed by the Architects Design Group (ADG).

St Aubyn Estates, which owns the historic Grade II listed inn, has invested more than £1.4 million to give it a new lease of life, appointing Plymouth-based ADG to project manage the contract from planning through to completion.

The centrepiece of the renovation is a modern glass extension that shows off the inn’s dramatic beachside location and opens up breathtaking panoramic views across the whole of Mounts Bay.

Substantial structural changes have been made to the original building in order to generate an open plan environment connecting the split-level restaurant and bars over several floors.

The design solution cleverly links the front entrance on Fore Street and the terrace overlooking the beach with a new top-lit staircase, creating a stylish and welcoming beachside venue with an informal, relaxed feel.

ADG project architect Patrick Deigan, who grew up in Penzance and maintains strong links with the area, said: “Something very special has been created at The Godolphin Arms and we are both proud and excited to have been involved in the project from its inception.

“It really does show off the best of what we do and I am delighted to have worked with the talented team that delivered the finished building.”

The evolution of the inn began in July 2012, when ADG worked with St Aubyn Estates on the concept design, reflecting the aspirations for the future of the inn and making it a year-round destination.

Making the most of the spectacular location was one of the key elements of the project, and the external space has been enhanced with a dedicated dining terrace and first floor balcony which provide unique 180 degree views.

A sleek new state-of-the-art kitchen and dedicated reception area for the refurbished en-suite guest bedrooms completes the makeover.

Mr Deigan continued: “ADG worked closely with Cornwall Council’s planning department and English Heritage to negotiate the major alterations that were necessary.

“The inn’s location within the Marazion Conservation Area and overlooking St Michael’s Mount provided us with a unique challenge and the successful resolution of major alterations in a sympathetic manner within this historical context has been a major success for the design team.”

Lord St Levan, of St Aubyn Estates, said: “It has been a great pleasure to work with such a talented and dedicated team, both in the detailed planning of the project and to deliver it within a tight timetable for the construction work itself. As well as greatly improving the facilities and ambience for guests, I feel that this development has enhanced the architectural merit of the building with stylish contemporary flourishes.”
